Teddy-bear cholla cactus
Teddy-bear cholla cactus (Opuntia bigelovii, light brown) with an ocotillo (Fouquieria splendens, green), growing in the Sonoran Desert, USA. The teddy-bear cholla cactus is found throughout the Mojave and Colorado deserts in south-western North America. Its stem segments break off easily when its spines become caught in the fur of a passing animal. These segments are carried away from the mature plant and may grow into new plants if conditions are favourable. The ocotillo possesses long green stems which may reach a height of over 7 metres. Photographed in Saguaro National Park, Arizona

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the unique beauty of the Sonoran Desert in the USA. In this stunning composition, a Teddy-bear cholla cactus stands tall, its light brown stems adorned with sharp spines that glisten under the desert sun. Standing beside it is an ocotillo, a vibrant green plant with long stems reaching for the sky. The Teddy-bear cholla cactus is a resilient species found across the Mojave and Colorado deserts in southwestern North America. Its survival strategy involves breaking off stem segments easily when its spines become entangled in passing animals' fur. These discarded segments have the potential to grow into new plants if they find favorable conditions. Contrasting against this prickly companion, the ocotillo adds a touch of elegance to the arid landscape. With its slender green stems stretching over 7 meters high, it commands attention and stands as a testament to nature's ability to adapt and thrive even in harsh environments like Saguaro National Park in Arizona. This remarkable photograph captures not only these fascinating botanical wonders but also highlights their significance within American flora. The image invites us to appreciate both their individual splendor and their harmonious coexistence amidst one of nature's most challenging habitats – reminding us of our planet's incredible biodiversity and resilience.
