Termen and his Termenvox. Russian and Soviet engineer Lev Termen (1896-1993) in 1932, playing his termenvox, an electric musical instrument that he had invented in 1919. Born Lev Termen, he was later known as Leon Theremin, and the musical instrument came to be known as a theremin. It was based on the heterodyne principle, and was played without touch by moving the hands through the air around the antennae. One controlled the pitch, and the other the volume. Termen toured Europe with his invention, patenting it in the USA in 1929. He lived in the USA in the 1930s, moving back to the USSR in 1938. There, he invented the first covert listening device. EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the brilliant mind of Russian and Soviet engineer Lev Termen, also known as Leon Theremin. Taken in 1932, it showcases Termen playing his groundbreaking invention, the termenvox. This electric musical instrument was a true marvel of its time, having been invented by Termen himself back in 1919. The termenvox, later renamed theremin after its creator's surname change, operated on the innovative heterodyne principle. What made this instrument truly extraordinary was that it could be played without any physical touch. By simply moving his hands through the air around the antennae, Termen effortlessly controlled both pitch and volume. Termen's genius invention gained international recognition as he toured Europe with his creation before patenting it in the United States in 1929. He even resided there during the 1930s before returning to his homeland in 1938. It is worth noting that while living in Russia, he went on to invent one of history's first covert listening devices. Lev Termen continued to make significant contributions until his passing at age 97 in 1993. His legacy lives on not only through this remarkable photograph but also through his pioneering work that forever changed music technology and espionage techniques alike.
