In this portrait from the 1910s, a young Sopwith can be seen confidently seated in a Howard Wright biplane, showcasing his passion for flight. Sopwith's journey into aviation began when he taught himself to fly in 1910, an impressive feat that would set him on a path to greatness. This achievement paved the way for his pivotal role as one of the founders of the renowned Sopwith Aviation Company in 1912. The company's most iconic creation was undoubtedly the legendary Sopwith Camel aircraft, which played a crucial role during World War I under British command. For his contributions to aviation and service during the war, Sopwith was honored with knighthood in 1953 and appointed CBE (Commander of the Order of the British Empire) in 1918.
