EDITORS COMMENTS
This print takes us back to the 18th century, where medical illustrations were primarily focused on the treatment of a ruptured Achilles tendon. Figures 1 to 9 depict an intricate design for a slipper that effectively immobilizes the heel and provides support to the foot in relation to the lower calf. The foot is delicately pointed downward, allowing for proper alignment and opposition of the torn tendon ends. This innovative boot was intended to be worn during daytime for a duration of up to five months, offering hope for recovery. Amongst these remarkable medical engravings lies Figure 10, showcasing an illustration of a pulka - a traditional sleigh pulled by reindeer in Lapland. This unexpected addition adds an intriguing contrast between medicine and culture from that era. The monochrome aesthetic enhances the historical significance of this collection, with its engraved details capturing every aspect meticulously. Todd-White Art Photography has masterfully captured this vertical image, emphasizing its white background which highlights both precision and elegance. This print serves as a reminder of how far medical advancements have come since those times while also appreciating the ingenuity displayed by orthotics specialists in treating injuries without resorting to surgical interventions. It is truly fascinating how art can encapsulate history and science within one frame.
