Tunguska forest

Fallen trees at Tunguska, 100 years after the famous explosion. At around 7.14am local time on 30 June 1908 a powerful explosion occurred above the Podkamennaya Tunguska River in the Krasnoyarsk region of Russia. It is believed that this was the air burst of a meteoroid or cometary fragment a few tens of metres across. Even though the explosion was 5-10 kilometres above the ground, the energy released was enough to flatten an estimated 80 million trees across an area of 2150 square kilometres. The energy released has been calculated as equivalent to 10-15 megatons of TNT - similar to a large hydrogen bomb

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the haunting aftermath of the Tunguska forest, a century after the infamous explosion that shook the world. In the early hours of June 30,1908, an immense blast erupted above Russia's Podkamennaya Tunguska River in the Krasnoyarsk region. The devastating event is believed to have been caused by a meteoroid or cometary fragment, measuring only tens of meters across but packing an unimaginable force. The sheer power unleashed by this air burst was so tremendous that it decimated approximately 80 million trees across an astonishing area spanning 2150 square kilometers. To put it into perspective, experts estimate that its energy release equaled a staggering 10-15 megatons of TNT – comparable to a colossal hydrogen bomb. As we gaze upon this image, we witness nature's resilience amidst destruction. Fallen trees stretch as far as our eyes can see through the dense taiga forest landscape. These once towering giants now lie horizontal and fragmented, bearing witness to the unstoppable force that ripped through their trunks and branches. Today marks both a somber anniversary and a testament to humanity's fascination with scientific mysteries. This photograph serves as a reminder of how even celestial bodies can leave indelible imprints on Earth's surface and shape our understanding of our place in the universe. It stands as evidence not only of past devastation but also our relentless pursuit for knowledge about these extraordinary events in history.
