Vacuum flask by Dewar, 1892 C016 / 3685

Dewar flask. Variation on an early design of vacuum flask made by James Dewar in 1892. This consists of two glass flasks, one inside the other, that are joined at the top. The space between the flasks is evacuated of air. This drastically reduces heat transport by convection or conduction. Dewar used this design in his experiments on the magnetic properties of liquid oxygen. This object is preserved at the Royal Institution, London

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases a remarkable invention from the late 19th century - the Vacuum flask by Dewar, dating back to 1892. The image captures an artefact of great historical significance, currently preserved at the prestigious Royal Institution in London. The Dewar flask is a variation on an early design of a vacuum flask created by James Dewar. It consists of two glass flasks delicately joined together at the top, with the space between them completely devoid of air. This ingenious design drastically reduces heat transport through convection or conduction. Originally intended for experiments on the magnetic properties of liquid oxygen, this thermal marvel revolutionized scientific research during its time. Its impeccable insulation capabilities allowed scientists like Dewar to study extreme temperatures and delve into cryogenic studies. This photograph not only immortalizes an important piece of scientific history but also highlights how innovation can shape our understanding of various fields. As we gaze upon this relic from over a century ago, we are reminded that progress is built upon groundbreaking discoveries such as these. Displayed within the walls of one of Britain's most esteemed institutions, this object serves as a testament to human curiosity and ingenuity. It stands as evidence that even in today's fast-paced world, where commercial applications dominate headlines, there remains immense value in preserving and honoring our scientific heritage.
