Walter Hinton, US aviator C017 / 7822
Walter T. Hinton (1888-1981), US aviator. Hinton joined the US Navy as a young man, seeing action in 1914. He became one of the early naval aviators, and became famous as the pilot of the Curtiss NC-4 flying boat that was the first to cross the Atlantic Ocean, doing so in May 1919. This was followed two weeks later by the first non-stop trans-Atlantic flight by Alcock and Brown. During the 1920s, Hintons pioneering flights included the first flight from North America to South America, and hydroplane explorations of the Amazon rainforest.
