Walter Hinton, US aviator C017 / 7822

Walter T. Hinton (1888-1981), US aviator. Hinton joined the US Navy as a young man, seeing action in 1914. He became one of the early naval aviators, and became famous as the pilot of the Curtiss NC-4 flying boat that was the first to cross the Atlantic Ocean, doing so in May 1919. This was followed two weeks later by the first non-stop trans-Atlantic flight by Alcock and Brown. During the 1920s, Hintons pioneering flights included the first flight from North America to South America, and hydroplane explorations of the Amazon rainforest. He founded the Aviation Institute of the USA in 1927. Photographed in Washington DC, USA, on 29 May 1939
