EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the renowned British physician, William Jenner, in a caricature published in the esteemed British weekly magazine Vanity Fair back in 1873. Dr. Jenner's significant contributions to medicine are highlighted through this artwork by Sir Leslie Ward (Spy). Having studied medicine in London and worked as a doctor, Jenner made groundbreaking advancements by distinguishing between typhus and typhoid disease. Previously, these two illnesses were erroneously considered to be one disease called continued fever. His expertise led him to be appointed as the physician to Queen Victoria and her family in 1861. Tragically, he attended the Prince Consort during his fatal case of typhoid. Despite this sorrowful event, Jenner's medical career flourished and brought him both wealth and recognition. He was elected Fellow of the Royal Society in 1864 and later bestowed with a baronet title in 1868. The lithograph itself beautifully captures Dr. Jenner's likeness while showcasing his iconic pince-nez spectacles that became synonymous with his image. This historical illustration on wove paper provides us with a glimpse into the life of an influential figure from the late 19th century. As we delve into art history through this chromolithograph print from Science Photo Library, we honor William Jenner's legacy as an exceptional physician who revolutionized epidemiology and left an indelible mark on medical science during his time.
