Young Sumatran orangutan
Young Sumatran orangutan (Pongo abelii). The orangutan is an arboreal (tree-dwelling) great ape endemic to Sumatra. It is a solitary animal, meeting others only to mate, although females and their young may stay together for several years. An adult male does not seem to have a defined territory, and never fights other males. The orangutans diet consists mainly of fruit and insects. EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases a young Sumatran orangutan, an arboreal great ape native to the lush forests of Sumatra, Indonesia. Known for its solitary nature, this magnificent creature only interacts with others during mating season or when females care for their offspring over several years. Unlike adult males of other species, these orangutans do not establish specific territories and avoid conflicts with fellow males. The diet of these remarkable primates primarily consists of fruits and insects found within their natural habitat. The image was captured in the breathtaking Gunung Leuser National Park, where the orangutan's vibrant presence adds to the park's rich biodiversity. With its intricate details and stunning composition, this photograph beautifully portrays the essence of this threatened species. As one of Asia's most iconic animals, it serves as a reminder of both the beauty and fragility present in our natural world. Sumatran orangutans are critically endangered due to deforestation and illegal hunting practices. Their survival is crucial for maintaining ecological balance within Southeast Asia's delicate ecosystems. Often referred to as "old man of the forest" or "red ape" these intelligent creatures hold immense biological significance as part of the hominidae family. Science Photo Library has expertly captured this moment in time, allowing us to appreciate and reflect upon our responsibility towards preserving such extraordinary wildlife treasures like the Sumatran orangutan.
