Founded in 1876, they have played at the Riverside Stadium since 1995 and are currently competing in the Championship, the second tier of English football. The club has won the League Cup twice and reached two FA Cup finals. They also competed in UEFA competitions on four occasions, reaching the final of the 2006 UEFA Cup. They have a long-standing rivalry with nearby Sunderland with whom they contest the Tyne–Tees derby. The club's main rivals are fellow Teesside team Hartlepool United and Leeds United from West Yorkshire. One of only three teams to have been both champions of England and winners of a major cup competition; they won both titles during their 2004–05 season under manager Steve McClaren.
