Brunel - you are a cursed lazy inattentive apathetic vagabond quote
In the 1830s IK Brunel had an assistant called FC Fripp. In one letter to Fripp Brunel writes Fripp. Plain gentlemanly language seems to have no effect on you. I must try stronger language and stronger methods. You are a cursed, lazy, inattentive, apathetic vagabond and if you continue to neglect my instructions I shall send you about your business. I have frequently told you, amongst other absurd, untidy habits, that of making drawings on the backs of others is inconvenient. By your cursed neglect of that you have wasted more of my time than your whole life is worth. It is not known what Fripp had done to deserve this message from Brunel, or why Brunel felt unable to fire him (as he did with other assistants who disappointed him)

EDITORS COMMENTS
In this intriguing photo print, we catch a glimpse into the complex relationship between Isambard Kingdom Brunel and his assistant FC Fripp during the 1830s. The caption reveals a scathing letter written by Brunel to Fripp, expressing his frustration and disappointment with his lack of dedication and attention to detail. The image captures the essence of Victorian era communication, where plain gentlemanly language seemed ineffective in conveying Brunel's dissatisfaction. With an air of mystery surrounding Fripp's transgressions, one can only wonder what actions led to such strong words from his esteemed employer. Despite being labeled as a "cursed lazy inattentive apathetic vagabond" it is curious why Brunel did not dismiss Fripp like he had done with other assistants who failed to meet expectations. Perhaps there was more than meets the eye in their dynamic or some redeeming qualities that kept him employed. This print serves as a reminder of the challenges faced by great minds like Isambard Kingdom Brunel during their quest for perfection. It also sheds light on the complexities of professional relationships in an era where directness and sternness were sometimes necessary tools for success. As we gaze upon this historical artifact, let us ponder how different working dynamics were back then compared to our modern world while appreciating the remarkable achievements that emerged from these turbulent collaborations.
