The second Railway Queen, Mabel Kitson, photographed at her crowning ceremony, at the Railway Carnival in Manchester, on 24th September 1927. She is surrounded by her attendants. Mabel was just 15 years old when she became Railway Queen. She was the daughter of a GWR signalman and lived in Colwall, on the edge of the Malvern Hills

In this photograph, the young and radiant Mabel Kitson, the second Railway Queen, is seen at her crowning ceremony during the Railway Carnival in Manchester on the 24th of September 1927. Mabel, who was only fifteen years old at the time, was surrounded by her devoted attendants, all dressed in elegant attire, adding to the grandeur of the occasion. Mabel's humble beginnings were in Colwall, nestled on the edge of the Malvern Hills, where her father worked as a signalman for the Great Western Railway (GWR). Her unexpected rise to the throne of the Railway Queen began when she was discovered by railway officials during a local pageant, impressing them with her beauty and poise. This once-in-a-lifetime experience provided Mabel with an unforgettable memory and a unique connection to the railway community. The Railway Carnival was an annual event organized by the railway companies to showcase their achievements and to entertain the public.
