1000 lb Bombs at the Swindon Works, 1941

This image taken in March 1941 shows two 1000lb bombs sat next to each other in the X Shop, one with a fin and one without. The 1000lb bomb was generally used on industrial targets and was carried by the RAF on the Hawker Typhoon. Apart from the 2, 000lb and 4000lb bombs, this was the largest of the standard bombs used by the RAF, with almost 1 million being made nationally during the war years

1940s Bomb Swindon Swindon Works 1941

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print from 1941 takes us back to the heart of wartime Britain, specifically the Swindon Works. In this image, we are transported to the X Shop, where two formidable 1000lb bombs rest side by side. One bomb is equipped with a fin while its counterpart lacks one. During World War II, these 1000lb bombs were primarily employed against industrial targets and were commonly carried by the Royal Air Force on their Hawker Typhoon aircraft. Apart from the larger 2,000lb and 4,000lb bombs, this particular variant was considered one of the largest standard bombs utilized by the RAF at that time. The significance of this photograph lies not only in its historical context but also in its representation of national effort and production during those tumultuous years. It is estimated that nearly one million of these powerful bombs were manufactured across Britain throughout the war. As we gaze upon this snapshot frozen in time, it serves as a poignant reminder of both sacrifice and determination exhibited by those who worked tirelessly at Swindon Works for our nation's defense. The Ministry of Aircraft played an integral role in ensuring that such weapons were readily available for deployment when needed most. Preserved within STEAM Museum's collection, this image encapsulates a crucial chapter in British history - a testament to resilience amidst adversity and a tribute to all those who contributed towards safeguarding our freedom.
