A petrol trailer fire pump hauled by an ex-GWR Express Cartage van, 1940

Fire fighting by the GWR was a important job in the Second World War. Incendiary bombs (designed to start fires) were used extensively during the war and caused devastation across many of the countrys cities and towns. By October 1943 the GWR had in operation 250 petrol trailer fire pumps, as seen in this image from July 1940. They were located at stations, goods yards, docks and factories. This trailer is being hauled by an ex-GWR Express Cartage van which was salvaged from the scrap heap in order to carry out fire fighting duties

EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph captures a significant moment in history during the Second World War. In the midst of chaos and destruction caused by incendiary bombs, the Great Western Railway (GWR) played a crucial role in fire fighting efforts across cities and towns. This particular image, taken in July 1940, showcases one of their 250 petrol trailer fire pumps in action. The GWR's dedication to protecting communities is evident as we witness an ex-GWR Express Cartage van hauling this essential fire pump. Rescued from the scrap heap, this van was given a new purpose - to aid in extinguishing fires that threatened lives and properties. As incendiary bombs wreaked havoc throughout the country, these petrol trailer fire pumps were strategically stationed at key locations such as stations, goods yards, docks, and factories. They stood ready to combat any flames that dared to ignite. In this snapshot frozen in time, we catch a glimpse of resilience amidst adversity. The determination of those involved with the GWR shines through as they utilize every resource available to protect their fellow citizens. This print serves as both a reminder of the devastating impact war can have on our communities and an homage to those who selflessly put themselves on the front lines for our safety. It stands as a testament to human ingenuity and unity during times when hope seemed scarce but never extinguished.
