The ice island that calved off the Petermann Glacier in northwestern Greenland migrates

August 16, 2010 - The ice island that calved off the Petermann Glacier in northwestern Greenland continues its slow migration down the fjord 11 days later. Although slivers of ice have loosened around its edges, the ice island has largely retrained its original shape. The island, which has rotated counterclockwise since the calving, also retains the crevassed structure of the Petermann Glacier; both the glacier and the ice island sport rippled surfaces. Thin longitudinal cracks appear on the ice island surface, and wider lateral cracks push in from the islands sides. An uneven line of pools, medium blue in color, runs down the length of the ice island. Along the glacieras new front, some smaller icebergs appear to have broken free, and ice fragments litter the water surface between the ice island and the glacier. Also visible in this image are multiple small glaciers that feed the Petermann, flowing down to the massive glacier from the northeastern side of the fjord

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the awe-inspiring sight of an ice island that calved off the Petermann Glacier in northwestern Greenland. Taken on August 16,2010, this image showcases the ice island as it slowly migrates down the fjord, eleven days after its initial separation from the glacier. Despite some slivers of ice loosening around its edges, the ice island has remarkably retained much of its original shape. The photograph also reveals intriguing details about the structure and characteristics of both the glacier and the ice island. The counterclockwise rotation of the island since calving is evident, as well as its crevassed surface mirroring that of Petermann Glacier. Thin longitudinal cracks can be observed on the surface, while wider lateral cracks push inward from either side. A striking feature is an uneven line of pools running along the length of this icy behemoth. These medium blue pools add a touch of color to an otherwise monochromatic landscape. In contrast to this frozen scene, smaller icebergs appear to have broken free near the glacier's new front, with scattered fragments littering the water surface between them and our main subject. Additionally visible are multiple small glaciers feeding into Petermann Glacier from northeastern side fjord; their presence emphasizes both their contribution to this massive glacier and highlights nature's intricate interconnectedness. This remarkable photograph by Stocktrek Images offers a glimpse into one aspect of Earth's ever-changing polar regions – a mesmerizing display that reminds us how delicate yet powerful our planet truly is.
