EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures a momentous occasion at the Annual Meeting of the Royal National Lifeboat Institution. The brave lifeboatmen who risked their lives to save those aboard the SS "Hopelyn" are being honored for their heroic efforts. In this historic image, we see Admiral Lord Beatty presenting the Coxswain, 2nd Coxswain, and Motor Mechanic of the Lowestoft Lifeboat, as well as the Coxswain and 2nd Coxswain of the Gorleston Lifeboat with prestigious Gold, Silver, and Bronze Medals. The two coxswains featured in this photograph are Coxswain Swan from Lowestoft on the right side and Coxswain Fleming from Gorleston on the left side. They proudly hold up a significant artifact - it is none other than the sole lifebelt salvaged from the ill-fated "Hopelyn". This poignant symbol serves as a reminder of both tragedy and triumph. Taken on April 17th, 1923 by Central News photographers in monochrome style, this image encapsulates an important moment in twentieth-century history. It showcases not only bravery but also highlights how these selfless individuals put their own lives at risk to protect others. Their unwavering dedication to saving lives deserves recognition that will forever be immortalized through this photograph.
