EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the majestic presence of a church in London's famous Strand. The image showcases St Mary le Strand, one of the two Island Churches located in this iconic area. Its name pays homage to the original church that was demolished by Somerset during his construction project for a new house. As part of Queen Anne's reign, this church was among the 50 scheduled to be built, and it took an impressive nine years to complete its construction, being consecrated in 1723. Legend has it that within these very walls, Prince Charles Edward Stuart renounced Roman Catholicism with hopes of increasing his chances at claiming his father's throne. This historical significance adds another layer of intrigue to this architectural masterpiece. The church stands on the site where once stood the Strand Maypole until its destruction in 1644. The photo also captures some traffic passing by its entrance, giving us a glimpse into life in London during the 1940s.
