Abstract visualisation: the dark tunnel into Herculaneum 3
Herculaneum, Italy - 22 October 2014
Located in the shadow of Mount Vesuvius, Herculaneum was an ancient Roman town destroyed by a major volcanic eruption in 79 AD. In fact, it was completely buried. This image started off showing the dark and scary tunnel that leads to the now uncovered remains. But then I got adventurous and turned it into something more colorful and abstract, using a combination of Photoshop techniques including multi-layer blending, transformations and gradient mapping. I hope you like it

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print titled "Abstract visualisation: the dark tunnel into Herculaneum 3" transports us to the ancient Roman town of Herculaneum, nestled in the ominous shadow of Mount Vesuvius. Once a thriving civilization, this historic site was tragically obliterated by a catastrophic volcanic eruption in 79 AD, leaving it buried for centuries. Initially capturing the eerie essence of an unexplored tunnel leading towards uncovered remnants, this image takes a bold artistic turn. The photographer's audacious spirit led them to transform it into a vibrant and abstract masterpiece using various Photoshop techniques such as multi-layer blending, transformations, and gradient mapping. The result is an explosion of colors that breathe new life into this forgotten world. As we gaze upon this artwork, we are reminded of the immense power nature holds over human existence. The convergence of layered effects and radial symmetry draws our eyes deeper into the composition, guiding us down vanishing steps towards an unknown destination. It evokes both curiosity and trepidation within us - beckoning us to venture further despite any fears that may arise. Through skillful manipulation and creative vision, Jon Bower has reimagined history with his unique perspective on Herculaneum's haunting past. This photograph serves as a testament to humanity's enduring fascination with ancient civilizations and their ability to rise from ashes even after being consumed by darkness.
