EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the haunting beauty of historic cranes in Royal Victoria Docks, London. Once a bustling port that reigned as the greatest on earth, these silent giants now stand as solemn reminders of a bygone era. The Dockland area of East London has undergone massive redevelopment, leaving these derelict cranes as poignant symbols of past greatness. Located outside the sleek and modern Excel Conference Centre, these gaunt and stark structures evoke a sense of urban decay. Their obsolescence is palpable against the backdrop of an empty harbour once teeming with commerce and trade. These relics made of iron girders salute the sky, their solid grey frames silhouetted against it. Looking up at these towering remnants from history elicits a mix of awe and nostalgia. They serve as witnesses to an industry that thrived on this very wharf, now deserted and unused. In their superfluous state, they seem both useless yet strangely beautiful. Photographer Jon Bower skillfully captures the essence of these historic cranes through his lens. His image portrays not only their physical presence but also conveys a deeper narrative about human progress and how time can render even grandeur obsolete
