EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the iconic Blackwall Tunnel in London, which opened its doors to the public in 1897. Serving as the older Western tunnel, this remarkable engineering feat connects the Essex and Kent sides of the majestic River Thames. The mastermind behind its design was none other than Alexander Binnie, renowned chief engineer of the London County Council. Employing cutting-edge techniques for its time, Binnie utilized James Henry Greatheads' revolutionary tunnelling shield during construction. The tunnel's interior boasts a stunning lining of glazed white brick and is illuminated by electric light, ensuring safe passage for both wheeled traffic and pedestrians on its two lanes and footpaths respectively. Capturing a mesmerizing view of the tunnel entrance against the backdrop of the flowing river, this photograph also offers a glimpse into bustling traffic within its depths. Published in "Bubbles c1900" by Dr Barnados Homes for Children, this oleograph transports us back to an era when civil engineering marvels like Blackwall Tunnel were transforming Britain's communication infrastructure. With every detail meticulously preserved in this image from Universal Images Group (UIG), we are reminded not only of London's rich history but also of mankind's relentless pursuit to conquer geographical barriers through innovation and ingenuity.
