EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases Alexander Wilson, a renowned teacher and ornithologist who played a significant role in shaping American ornithology. Born in Paisley, Scotland in 1766, Wilson's passion for birds led him to emigrate to America in 1794. He became an American citizen ten years later, solidifying his commitment to his newfound home. Considered by many as the father of American ornithology, Wilson dedicated himself to studying and documenting the diverse bird species found across the continent. His magnum opus was the monumental work titled "American Ornithology" which consisted of nine volumes published between 1808 and 1814. Tragically, Wilson's life was cut short when he passed away in 1813 before completing his ambitious project. However, his friend George Ord took up the mantle and completed the final two volumes on his behalf. The engraving featured here is part of "The Naturalists Library" edited by William Jardine from Edinburgh and London between 1839 and 1854. It serves as a testament to Wilson's lasting legacy as a scientist and naturalist whose contributions continue to inspire bird enthusiasts worldwide
