After five years at Birmingham General Hospital, in 1837 he moved to Kings College Hospital, London. In the early 1840s he published papers on the structure and function of the kidneys. In 1846 he joined Moorfields Ophthalmic Hospital, London, and became an authority on the eye and the leading ophthalmic surgeon. Fellow of the Royal Society, 1841. This vintage print captures the esteemed figure of William Bowman, a renowned English anatomist, surgeon, and ophthalmologist. Born in Nantwich, Cheshire in 1816, Bowman's contributions to the field of medicine were immense. After spending five years at Birmingham General Hospital, he relocated to Kings College Hospital in London in 1837. It was during the early 1840s that he published groundbreaking papers on the intricate structure and vital function of the kidneys. In 1846, Bowman joined Moorfields Ophthalmic Hospital where he established himself as an authority on all matters concerning the eye. His expertise as a leading ophthalmic surgeon earned him great respect within his profession. Notably, he became a Fellow of the Royal Society in 1841 and later served as the first president of the Ophthalmological Society in 1880. The year 1884 marked another milestone for Bowman when he was granted a baron title for his exceptional contributions to medicine. This particular image is part of Punch magazine's Fancy Portraits series from January that same year.
