Traffic control experiment, The Cross, 12 August 1955

Watched by County Surveyor, City Surveyor and Chairman of the Citys Highways Committee, cars pass on either side of the Cross in an attempt to test the likely effect of traffic lights. For an hour until noon, half a dozen policemen operated a four-phase signalling system, giving the " green light" to traffic from one street at a time. Motorists were allowed to pass either side of the Cross, instead of keeping left. such a system, it was hoped, would enable a smoother flow of traffic, and free up the familiar constable in white gloves for other duties. Other proposed solutions had included widening the turning circle around the Cross by running pavements in arcades through the ground floors of corner shops

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures a significant traffic control experiment that took place at The Cross on 12 August 1955. In the presence of esteemed individuals such as the County Surveyor, City Surveyor, and Chairman of the City's Highways Committee, cars can be seen passing on either side of The Cross in an attempt to test the potential impact of traffic lights. For one hour until noon, a group of six policemen diligently operated a four-phase signalling system, granting the "green light" to traffic from one street at a time. This innovative approach aimed to create a smoother flow of vehicles and relieve the burden on traditional constables who were often occupied with directing traffic manually while wearing their iconic white gloves. To further explore solutions for improved traffic management, widening the turning circle around The Cross was also proposed by running pavements in arcades through ground floors of corner shops. Such initiatives sought to optimize road usage and enhance overall efficiency. Preserved within Chichester Photographic Collection at West Sussex Record Office under reference number CPS 0337/1, this image offers us a glimpse into an era when pioneering ideas were being tested to revolutionize transportation systems. As we reflect upon this nostalgic scene from mid-20th century Chichester, it is fascinating to witness how our ancestors tirelessly strived for progress in managing car congestion through creative experiments like these.
