Malakal Collection

Malakal is a city located in the Upper Nile State of South Sudan, and is the capital County and lies on the west bank of the White Nile River. The city has a population of over 200,000 people and serves as an important trading center for goods coming from Ethiopia, Uganda, Kenya, and other parts of South Sudan, and is home to many cultural sites such as churches, mosques, temples, and historical monuments. The economy in Malakal relies heavily on agriculture with crops such as sorghum being grown in abundance. Fishing is also an important part of life here with many locals relying on it for sustenance. In recent years however conflict has plagued the region leading to displacement and destruction throughout much of South Sudan including Malakal itself which was destroyed during fighting between government forces and rebels in 2014-2015.
