Optical image of the Tarantula nebula in Dorado
Tarantula nebula. True-colour optical image of the Tarantula nebula (NGC 2070, 30 Doradonis) in the constellation Dorado. This immense nebula is not actually in our galaxy, the Milky Way, at all, but is in one of the Milky Way's satellite galaxies, the Large Magellanic Cloud. This small galaxy lies around 170, 000 light years from Earth. The nebula is a huge cloud of hydrogen gas ionised by hot, young stars at its centre. It is thought to cover over 5000 light years, dwarfing any such nebula in our galaxy. The great Orion nebula, by comparison, is around 15 light years wide. This image was produced by digitally combining photographs taken by the UK Schmidt Telescope in blue and red light

Artwork showing arthritis of a thumb joint
Arthritis. Artwork of a joint in the thumb affected by arthritis. The area of pain and inflammation is highlighted in orange. The affected joint is between the metacarpal and first phalanx bone of the thumb. There are many types of arthritis. The two most common are rheumatoid arthritis, in which the body's defences start to attack the soft joint tissues, and osteoarthritis, which is generally caused by wear and tear. Both cause pain and joint stiffness in varying degrees. Arthritis commonly affects the joints in the hand, and may lead to disfigurement and loss of grip. Treatment is mainly aimed at reducing symptoms with painkillers and anti-inflammatory drugs
