Optical image of the North America nebula Featured 11 Dec 2003 Print

Optical image of the North America nebula

North America nebula. True-colour optical image of the North America nebula (NGC 7000). This large nebula is about 3000 light years away, and lies in the constellation Cygnus. It is composed mainly of hydrogen gas, which glows due to ionisation by radiation from a young, hot and massive star at the nebula's heart. Hot massive stars live for a relatively short time, so such nebulae are usually of recent origin. The North America nebula is believed to be around 10 million years old. To the right of this nebula is part of the Pelican nebula (IC 5067-5070). This image was produced by digitally combining photographs taken by the Palomar Schmidt Telescope in blue and red light

Voyager spacecraft Featured 11 Dec 2003 Print

Voyager spacecraft

Voyager satellite. Illustration of a Voyager or Voyager-like astronomical satellite with the Milky Way in the background as it explores deep space. The satellite has a round communication antenna and pole-like booms which support astronomical instruments. The Voyager programme consisted of two satellites which were intended to study the outer areas of the solar system. Both satellites successfully produced detailed images of the outer planets and their moons. They also took measure- ments of the strength of the planet's magnetic fields, as well as that of the Sun. In 1997 the satellites continue to take measurements as they pass out of the solar system into deep space
