Chlamydia bacterium, TEM Featured 30 Jan 2003 Print

Chlamydia bacterium, TEM

Chlamydia bacterium. Coloured transmission electron micrograph (TEM) of a section through a Chlamydia sp. bacterium. This bacterium can cause a variety of infections in humans, most notably non-specific urethritis (NSU), which is a sexually-transmitted disease (STD). Severe cases of NSU chlamydial infection can cause sterility in both men and women. The condition can be treated with antibiotic drugs, but often NSU causes no symptoms, meaning that it goes unnoticed. Chlamydia sp. bacteria are smaller than most other bacteria, but larger than viruses. They can only reproduce inside a host cell. Magnification: x50, 000 at 6x7cm size
