Cultured Staphylococcus bacteria
Staphylococcus bacteria. Cultured colonies of Staphylococcus aureus bacteria in a petri dish. S. aureus is a Gram-positive, non- motile, spherical bacterium associated with suppurative infections in humans, such as boils and abscesses, and with respiratory infections, such as pneumonia. It produces toxins responsible for food poisoning. These bacteria have been cultured on Chapman medium, which is selective for Staphylococcus bacteria. Selective media are used to check for the presence of specific bacteria

Production of integrated circuits
Production of integrated circuits. Repeatingrows of identical integrated circuits that havebeen mass-produced on a production line. Theelectronic semiconductor components (shiny, coloured) make up the square units on a basematerial (black). Holes (blue) have been punchedin the base material, and mark the corners of eachsquare unit. Integrated circuits are used in mostelectronic devices, such as computers. Techniquesof mass-production allow extremely accurateproduction of small integrated circuits, resultingin electronic devices that are both compact andreliable. Photographed in 1996
