LM of frogspawn of the European edible frog Featured 29 Mar 2004 Print

LM of frogspawn of the European edible frog

Frog spawn. Light micrograph of freshly-laid eggs (frog spawn) of the European edible frog, Rana temporaria. The dark circle at the centre of each egg is the developing embryo. R. temporaria lays its eggs in ponds during February and March in lowland areas and as late as June in the mountains. The spawning season in any one area is restricted to a period of one to three nights R. temporaria eggs are amongst the first frog spawn to hatch; the tadpoles feed on the frog spawn of other species. They metamorphosize into the adult form in two to three months, before migrating to damp woods and meadows. Magnification: x1.5 at 35mm size & x3 at 5x7cm size
