Cyclops. In Homer's Odyssey, the Cyclopes (pl.) were a colony of man-eating giants who lived in the mountains of Sicily. Odysseus, the hero of Odyssey, and his men landed on the island and sought shelter in the cave of the Cyclops Polyphemus. Polyphemus trapped the men in the cave and began to eat them. Odysseus got the Cyclops drunk, blinded him and escaped with his remaining men. The myth of the Cyclops probably originated from extinct dwarf elephant bones and skulls found on Sicily. The single large opening for the trunk in an elephant skull may have been mistaken as the eye socket of a giant
