Suburbs of Calcutta, where a native merchant returning from the city transported in a horse-drawn carriage passes-through at high speed. Meanwhile some relaxed Hindoo labourers sitting on the floor, under a shaded banyan tree, smoking a sort of hookah, relaxing and talking. Date: 1857

Discovery ship HMS Investigator used as police-station

Captain Cooks discovery ship, the HMS Investigator, (1811), moored at Somerset House, London on the River Thames. Converted into a police-station in March 1837, on 19 April 1842, she sprang a leak and sank, the seven police officers on board were rescued, eventually in October 1857 she was scraped

Night travelling in the Punjab 1857

Travelling at night is accompanied by a musalchee or torch-bearer, who runs a little before the palanquin, with the torch, not only for the purpose of showing them the way, but to keep off the tigers and other wild beasts. Date: 1857
