Tufted Coquette Collection

The Tufted Coquette (Lophornis ornatus) is a species of hummingbird found in South America, and is a small bird, measuring around 3.5 inches in length and weighing only 0.2 ounces. Its plumage is mainly grayish-brown, with white spots on the wings and tail feathers, and a distinctive black tuft on its head. The Tufted Coquette feeds primarily on nectar from flowers, but will also take small insects as well as spiders and other arthropods and has been observed to use its long bill to probe into flowers for nectar or to catch insects in flight. This species prefers lowland forests and can be found at elevations up to 2000 meters above sea level. The Tufted Coquette is considered of least concern by the IUCN due to its wide range and stable population size over recent years, although it does face threats from habitat destruction due to deforestation for agriculture or logging activities.
