Common Potoo Collection

Common Potoos are a species of nightjar, a type of Caprimulgiformes bird found in the Americas. They have large eyes and long wings, and their plumage is mottled brown with white spots, and are most active at night, when they hunt for insects using their long bills. During the day they roost on branches or tree trunks, where they blend in with the bark and can be difficult to spot. Common Potoos make loud calls during mating season that sound like "pee-yow" or "whoo-hoo". They nest in tree cavities or on top of branches, laying one egg at a time that is incubated by both parents for about 25 days before hatching, and are an important part of tropical ecosystems as they help keep insect populations in check while providing food for other animals such as snakes and hawks.
