Northern Cassowary Collection

The Northern Cassowary is a large, flightless bird native to the tropical rainforests of New Guinea and far north Queensland and has a distinctive black plumage with bright blue neck and head feathers, and a large helmet-like casque on its head. Its long legs are powerful enough to run up to 50 km/h, making it one of the fastest birds in the world. The Northern Cassowary is an omnivore that feeds on fruits, fungi, insects, small vertebrates and carrion. It plays an important role in dispersing seeds throughout its habitat by consuming fruits and excreting their seeds elsewhere. Unfortunately, this species is threatened by habitat loss due to deforestation for agriculture as well as hunting for food or sport. Conservation efforts are needed to ensure the survival of this unique species in its natural environment.
