Western Sandpiper Collection

The Western Sandpiper (Calidris mauri) is a small shorebird belonging to the family Scolopacidae, which includes sandpipers, plovers and other wading birds, and is found in coastal areas of North America from Alaska to Mexico, dark brown back and wings with white spots, and its belly is white. Its bill is short and slightly curved downwards. It feeds on insects, crustaceans, worms and other small invertebrates found in mudflats or shallow waters along the coast. During breeding season it nests in grassy areas near water bodies such as marshes or ponds. It migrates south for the winter months where it can be seen along beaches or mudflats from California to Mexico. This species of sandpiper has been declining due to loss of habitat caused by human activities such as development of coastal areas for residential use or agricultural production. Conservation efforts are needed to ensure this species' survival into the future.
