Coastal Elephant Bird Collection

The Coastal Elephant Bird was a large, flightless bird native to Madagascar. It was the largest bird ever known to have existed, standing up to 10 feet tall and weighing up to 800 pounds. It had a long neck and beak, with powerful legs for running and walking. Its feathers were greyish-brown in color, with some white patches on its wings and tail. It primarily fed on fruits, nuts, roots, insects, small animals and eggs. Unfortunately this species went extinct in the 17th century due to overhunting by humans for its meat and eggs as well as habitat destruction caused by deforestation. Despite this sad fate of the Coastal Elephant Bird it still remains an iconic symbol of Madagascar's unique biodiversity today.
