Green Heron Collection

The Green Heron is a small wading bird native to North and Central America and has a long neck, short legs, and a long, pointed bill. Its plumage is mostly greenish-brown with white stripes on its head and neck. The Green Heron feeds mainly on fish but also eats insects, crustaceans, amphibians, reptiles, and small mammals. It typically hunts by standing still in shallow water or along the shoreline until it spots prey before quickly striking out with its bill to capture it. During breeding season the Green Heron builds nests in trees or shrubs near water sources such as ponds or streams, and are solitary birds that form pairs only during the breeding season when they will raise their young together until they are ready to leave the nest after about four weeks of age. The Green Heron is an important part of wetland ecosystems as it helps keep populations of fish and other aquatic species in balance by preying upon them for food.
