Larks are passerine birds in the family Alaudidae, and are small to medium-sized birds with a strong beak and long hind claws. They have a wide variety of habitats, from deserts to grasslands, and can be found on every continent except Antarctica. They have distinctive songs that vary from species to species and can often be heard singing at dawn or dusk. Their diet consists mainly of insects, but they will also eat seeds and other plant material and can monogamous, forming pairs for life and nesting on the ground or in low shrubs or trees. The female usually lays three to five eggs which both parents help incubate until they hatch after about two weeks and can an important part of many ecosystems as they help control insect populations while providing food for predators such as hawks and owls.
