The Asian Elephant is a species of elephant native to the Indian subcontinent, Southeast Asia, and China, and is the largest living land animal in Asia and has been listed as an endangered species since 1986, stocky body with short legs and a long trunk that it uses for communication, grasping objects, and drinking water. Its ears are much smaller than those of its African counterpart. Its tusks are curved upwards and can grow up to 3 feet in length. The coat color varies from grey to brownish-red or yellowish-brown depending on the region it inhabits. The Asian Elephant lives in small herds of up to 10 individuals led by an older female known as the matriarch.
