Damaliscus phillipsi Collection

Damaliscus phillipsi, commonly known as the topi or tsessebe, is a species of antelope in the Bovidae family, and is native to Africa, where it inhabits grasslands and savannas. The topi has a reddish-brown coat with white patches on its legs and face. Its horns are lyre-shaped and can reach up to 45 cm in length. The topi is an herbivore that feeds mainly on grasses, but will also eat fruits, leaves, and other vegetation when available. It lives in herds of up to 30 individuals led by a dominant male. During the dry season they migrate long distances in search of food and water sources, and are hunted for their meat by both humans and predators such as lions and hyenas. Conservation efforts have been successful at preserving their population numbers despite these threats due to strong legal protection from hunting in many African countries.
