American Beaver Collection

The American Beaver (Castor canadensis) is a large, semi-aquatic rodent native to North America, and is the largest rodent in North America and one of the two extant beaver species. The American Beaver has an average body length of 30-45 inches, with a tail length of 10-15 inches. Its fur is dark brown in color and its underbelly is lighter in color. The American Beaver has webbed hind feet for swimming and long, sharp incisors for gnawing on wood. It builds dams to create ponds which provide protection from predators as well as access to food sources such as aquatic plants and fish. Beavers also use their dams to store food for winter months when food sources are scarce, and are important members of many ecosystems, providing habitat for other animals while helping maintain water levels and prevent flooding downstream.
