Santa Cruz Mouse Collection

Santa Cruz mouse (Cricetidae) is a small mammal native to the Santa Cruz Islands in California, and is one of the few species of Cricetidae found in North America and is listed as an endangered species by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, grayish-brown fur with white underparts, large ears, and a long tail with black tips on its feet and tail tip. Its diet consists mainly of seeds, fruits, nuts, insects, and other small invertebrates found in its habitat. The Santa Cruz mouse lives primarily in grasslands or chaparral habitats near streams or rivers but can also be found living in burrows dug into banks or hillsides, and is active during both day and night but tends to be more active during dawn and dusk hours when temperatures are cooler. Conservation efforts are underway to protect this unique species from further decline due to habitat destruction caused by human activities such as logging and development projects on the islands where it resides.
