Hectors Dolphin Collection

Hector's Dolphin is a species of small, oceanic dolphin found only in New Zealand, and is the smallest and rarest of all dolphins, with an estimated population of just 7,000 individuals. The species has a distinctive rounded dorsal fin and grey-black body with white markings on the sides and back. Hector's Dolphins are usually found in shallow coastal waters near the shoreline, but can also be seen further out to sea in deeper waters. They feed mainly on small fish such as anchovies and sprats, as well as squid and crustaceans. Threats to this species include fishing nets, pollution from agricultural runoff, boat strikes, habitat destruction due to coastal development and climate change. Conservation efforts are underway to protect this endangered species from further decline by creating marine reserves for them to live in safely away from human activities that could harm them or their habitat.
