Hippopotamus Collection

Hippopotamidae are mammals in the family Hippopotamidae, which includes two extant species: the common hippopotamus and the pygmy hippopotamus, and are large, semi-aquatic animals that inhabit rivers, lakes, and swamps in sub-Saharan Africa. Hippos have a barrel-shaped body with short legs and a large head with eyes, ears, and nostrils on top. They have an enormous mouth with sharp canine teeth for grazing on grasses and other vegetation. Their skin is thick and grayish-brown in color to help protect them from predators such as lions or crocodiles. Hippos spend most of their time in water to keep cool during hot days but come out at night to graze on land, and are social animals that live in groups of up to 30 individuals led by a dominant male known as a bull. Hippos can be aggressive when threatened or disturbed so it is best to observe them from a distance.
