The Northern Hopping-mouse (Notomys aquilo) is a species of small rodent in the Muridae family of mammals, and is native to Australia and can be found in arid regions across the continent, body length of up to 8 cm, with a tail length of up to 13 cm. Its fur is greyish brown on its upper parts, with white or yellowish underparts and has long hind legs and large ears which help it detect predators and prey. The Northern Hopping-mouse feeds mainly on seeds, fruits, insects and other small invertebrates, and is an active forager during the night time, but can also be seen during daylight hours when temperatures are cooler or when food sources are scarce. Breeding occurs from August to October with litters typically consisting of two to four young born after a gestation period of 22 days. This species is listed as least concern by the IUCN Red List due to its wide distribution range and stable population numbers throughout its range.
