Mud Turtles Collection

Mud turtles are a type of reptile found in North America, and are small and typically measure between 3-5 inches in length. They have a domed carapace, or shell, that is usually dark brown to black with yellow or orange markings. Their plastron, or bottom shell, is usually yellowish-brown with dark spots and stripes. Mud turtles live in slow moving streams, ponds and marshes where they feed on aquatic insects, snails and worms. They spend most of their time underwater but can be seen basking on logs during the day. These reptiles hibernate during the winter months by burying themselves in mud at the bottom of their watery habitats until spring arrives again and can an important part of wetland ecosystems as they help to control insect populations while providing food for other animals such as raccoons and birds of prey.
