American Black Bear Collection

The American Black Bear (Ursus americanus) is a species of bear native to North America, and is the continent's smallest and most widely distributed bear species. The American black bear has short, non-retractable claws that give it an excellent tree-climbing ability. Its diet consists of both plants and animals, including berries, nuts, insects, honey, fish, small mammals and carrion, and are mostly active at night or during the early morning hours when they search for food. During the winter months they may enter into a state of dormancy known as "denning". The American black bear is not considered to be endangered but their populations have been declining due to habitat loss and hunting by humans. Conservation efforts are underway in many areas to protect this species from further decline.
