Thomas Buttersworth Collection

Thomas Buttersworth (1768–1842) was an English maritime painter who specialized in naval battles and coastal scenes. He was born in London, the son of a shipwright. He trained as a coach painter and worked for the Royal Navy as a marine draughtsman from 1795 to 1804. His paintings often depicted naval engagements during the Napoleonic Wars, including the Battle of Trafalgar and the Bombardment of Algiers. Buttersworth also painted many coastal scenes, such as views of Dover Harbour or Portsmouth Harbour with ships at anchor or under sail. His works are characterized by their accurate detail and vivid colors, which were achieved through his use of thin glazes over bright pigments, and are highly sought after by collectors today due to their historical accuracy and aesthetic appeal.
