John de Critz (1551-1642) was a Flemish painter who worked in England during the reign of James I and Charles I. He was born in Antwerp, and trained under his father, Jan de Critz the Elder. He moved to England around 1590 and became court painter to James I in 1603. His works were mainly portraits of the royal family and other members of court, as well as mythological scenes for masques performed at court. He also painted religious works for churches, including altarpieces for Westminster Abbey. His style is characterized by its realism and attention to detail; he often used bright colors to convey emotion or symbolism within his paintings. De Critz died in London in 1642 at the age of 91, leaving behind a legacy of beautiful artwork that continues to be admired today.
