After studying with Thomas Sully and Gilbert Stuart, he established himself as one of the leading portrait painters of his day. His works were highly sought after by wealthy families and prominent politicians such as Andrew Jackson and Daniel Webster. He also painted many famous figures from history including George Washington, Benjamin Franklin, and Alexander Hamilton.
